Biography

Marlies Bockstal obtained her Master of Science in Sociology in 2019 at the University of Ghent. For her master’s dissertation, she conducted a qualitative study that focused on the interactions between young children and their dogs in the family context.

From August 2020 until December 2021, Marlies worked as a junior researcher at Hedera. She worked on two research projects: the FWO Rode Neuzen: STIGMA project and the European VAX-TRUST project.

Since February 2022, she is a PhD candidate under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Nik Taylor and Prof. Dr. Annie Potts, as part of the Aotearoa New Zealand Centre for Human-Animal Studies (ANZCHAS) at the University of Canterbury in Aotearoa. Her PhD research is situated within the multi-and inter-disciplinary field of Human-Animal Studies (HAS), and Critical Animal Studies (CAS) in particular. For her PhD project, she focusses on pedigree dog breeding in Aotearoa New Zealand. By drawing on critical sociological, intersectional and (eco)feminist approaches, she examines how pedigree dog breeders legitimise their breeding practices through a discourse of ‘responsible breeding’. Her research interests mainly lie in critical pet studies, vegan sociology, (eco)feminism, intersectionality and species-inclusive qualitative methodologies.

Marlies is currently associated with the University of Ghent as an affiliated researcher. She is also the co-founder of the Belgian Centre for Human-Animal Studies.
