Faculty Editor

  • Oversees the management, organization, production, publication and publicizing of the journal, serving as a mentor, guide and the primary faculty contact for student editorial team and student authors.
  • Organizes regular meetings with the Editorial Collective, Student Editor in Chief, Production Associate, Assistant Editor in Chief, Blog Editor and Communications Associate
  • Organizes and manages (with the assistance of SEIC) meetings inclusive of all faculty and student editorial participants at least once per year
  • Initiates and corresponds with members of the Editorial Collective to nurture communal space
    • This could entail guidance or sharing workload with material support
  • Reviews peer review reports prior to their release to authors
  • Liaises with Faculty Advisory Board as needed
  • Attends student team meetings and provides support as needed
  • This may entail assisting student editors to make decisions about article inclusions and advising on editorial processes
  • Oversees deadlines and tasks in collaboration with Student Editor in Chief, Assistant Editor in Chief and Faculty Advisory Board
  • Provides direct support to Production Associate to see the manuscripts through to publication
  • Provides direct support to Blog Editor to obtain, spotlight, and peer review online content
  • Provides direct support to Communications Associate
    • Initiates and participates in outreach for submissions/establishing and maintaining connections with faculty and graduate programs for future submissions
  • Provides direct support and guidance to: delegate tasks to the collective as appropriate, and based on student needs and preferences; balance email and meeting obligations on the journal team, involving students in feedback to assess all components of the journal, and the involved processes

 

Student Editor in Chief

  • Manages and organizes the production, publication, and publicization of the journal.
  • Oversees deadlines and tasks
  • Responds to emails to the journal, including all submissions, within 2 business days where possible
    • Complex cases may be forwarded to Faculty Editor for actioning
  • Organizes and anonymizes submissions in Microsoft Teams
  • Organizes editorial meetings, including reminders
  • Meets regularly with Faculty Editor, Assistant Editor in Chief, Blog Editor and Communications Associate
  • Collects and liaises with editors of the collective on commentary and peer review forms to ensure they are submitted in a timely fashion. And then again, after Faculty Editor provides feedback
  • Co-author, with Assistant Editor in Chief, the introductory chapter for the issue
  • Corresponds with members of the editorial collective to nurture communal space
  • Works with Faculty Editor to: delegate tasks to the collective as appropriate, and based on student needs and preferences; balance email and meeting obligations on the journal team, involving students in feedback to assess when meetings are appropriate over emails.
  • Coordinates with Newsletter Editor to provide relevant content (new issue, new blog posts, calls for submissions, etc)

Assistant Editor in Chief

  • Supports the Student Editor in Chief in managing and organizing the production, publication, and publicization of the journal.
  • Attend regular meetings with the Faculty Editor and Student Editor in Chief
  • Take meeting minutes
  • Works with Faculty Advisor and Student Editor in Chief to oversee deadlines and tasks
  • Provides support to the SEIC to organize editorial meetings, including reminders
  • Organizes and compiles agendas for annual meetings, housekeeping documents, such as, roles and responsibilities of the collective, criteria for peer review, initiating updates for editorial bios and photos, etc.
  • Supports Student Editor in Chief in the collection and liaising with editors of the collective on commentary and peer review forms to ensure they are submitted in a timely fashion. And then again, after Faculty Editor provides feedback
  • Co-author with Student Editor in Chief the introductory chapter for the issue

 

Production Associate

  • Overseeing, managing, and organizing the production process of the journal
  • Supports the Student Editor in Chief and the Assistant Editor in Chief in collection of and liaising with editors of the collective on commentary and peer review forms to ensure they are submitted in a timely fashion. And then again, after Faculty Editor provides feedback
  • Liaise and provide support for Student Editor in Chief, for the back-and-forth with the selected authors on the re-editing process
  • Support with correspondence and content editing, the writing of the introductory chapter for the issue, which Student Editor in Chief and the Assistant Editor in Chief will do, and potentially others from the collective.
  • Liaise with Student Editor in Chief and Faculty Editor all final editing for Submissions and
    Introduction to the journal and issue
  • Liaise with Corey Wrenn and the Design Associate in the online and open access, layout,
    design, availability and structure of the journal

 

Blog Editor

  • Collaborates with student authors to create blog essays on vegansociology.com that will be
    directly relevant to activists and laypeople.
  • Collects the synopsis and accompanying illustration (image, graph, art, etc.) for each publication to be included in the journal as well as rejected submissions (if appropriate)
  • Collects author photo, affiliation and biography (unless author declines)
  • Liaises with Faculty Editor in obtaining and spotlighting online content
  • Ensures submissions are especially easy to share and use by peer reviewing blog post summaries prior to posting
    • Enters meta-data and optimizes shareability
    • Liaises with Communications Associate to share blog updates through IAVS
      channels and associated networks
  • Ensures the associated illustration is not restricted by copyright
    • Assists authors in sourcing illustration as needed
  • Monitors comments on blog (if comments are turned on)
  • Attends regular meetings with the Faculty Editor and Student Editor in Chief
  • Coordinates with Corey Wrenn who will approve and publish draft blogs
  • Communications Associate
  • Manages and organizes multiple networking connections for the purposes of soliciting journal
    submissions and nurturing a diverse international readership.
  • Networks regularly and consistently (about once a semester) with faculty, graduate students, academic institutions and associations globally, as well as interested animal advocacy groups
    • Prioritizes building connections in underrepresented nations
    • Liaises with Faculty Editor to identify relevant individuals and groups
  • Manages a database for our network
  • Attends regular meetings with the Faculty Editor and Student Editor in Chief
  • Maintains regular presence on Twitter and Facebook
    • New IAVS blogs, announcements, newsletters, member achievements, related events, etc.
    • Avoids material that duplicates the content of similar critical animal studies collectives (ie. no need for interesting news stories or cute animal videos)
    • All posts should be composed with full professionalism as consistent with IAVS guidelines
  • Coordinates with Newsletter Editor and Blog Editor as needed
  • Works with interested student authors to create Youtube content for the IAVS channel
    • Coordinates with Corey Wrenn for uploading and editing videos

 

Newsletter Editor

  • Liaises with Student Editor in Chief to determine content related to student journal
  • Liaises with Corey Wrenn for content related to other IAVS activities
  • Develops easy to read, professional and consistently designed newsletters using Mailchimp
  • Reports to Corey Wrenn for final approval of newsletters or any technical issues
  • Newsletters should be no more than one issue per month (relating mostly to event announcements, calls for papers, and journal spotlights)
    • All posts should be composed with full professionalism as consistent with IAVS
      guidelines
  • Creates annual “year in review” newsletter summarizing IAVS activities
  • Attends student journal meetings only as relevant

 

Editorial Student Collective

  • Meets as a collective 4-6 times per year to oversee the management and the trajectory of the journal’s production, publication, and publicization
  • Contributes expertise in multi-species and vegan sociology from diverse international contexts
  • Advises the development of the journal
  • Peer reviews submissions based on interest and expertise
  • Makes recommendations for publication in our journal’s annual production

 

Faculty Advisory Board

  • Oversees the trajectory of the journal
  • Offers some support for future development
  • Reviews peer review reports
  • Contributes expertise in multi-species and vegan sociology from diverse international contexts IAVS Co-founders
  • Oversees the trajectory of the journal
  • Monitors the progress reports provided by the Faculty Editor
  • Reviews meeting minutes monthly
  • Reviews outputs to ensure they are in line with IAVS principles
  • Provision of some material support as needed
  • Point of contact for issues and queries that cannot be resolved by the Faculty Editor
